Philadelphia is home to some of the most classic tunes and talented artists across genres. From the legendary writing of Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff, to the now iconic harmonies of Boyz II Men; the grit of rapper Meek Mill to the incomparable vocals of Jazmine Sullivan, the ‘sound of Philadelphia’ is alive, well, and ever evolving. Making there mark as one of Philly’s premiere bands is Vertical Current, lead by musician, songwriter, arranger and composer Chris Stevens. Individually, the band members have traveled throughout the world, performing and/or recording with everyone from Earth, Wind and Fire & Roberta Flack to The Roots, J. Cole and Tye Tribbett.

In 2011, Vertical Current released their acclaimed debut EP “aRe”, highlighting the band’s eclecticism, impeccable musicianship, and lyrical prowess. Using the mass appeal of Pop music, the charisma of Jazz, the groove of Funk and the soul of Gospel, Vertical Current has managed to create their unique arrangements of jazz standards as well as their show stopping original compositions. Since the band’s inception in 2009, they have been busy crafting fresh and exciting music by harnessing the skill and experience of its members and tapping into the vibrant energy of an incredible music community.

Now, with the release of there debut album “Bright Side of Midnight,” released today, they combine all of those musical elements creating a solid body of work with the simple message of hope. With creative and exciting features from Chartel, Lee Mo, El’Ahmad Barak, and Rick Tate Jr., Vertical Current takes listeners on a diverse musical journey, from the smooth yet pulsating title track “Bright Side of Midnight” to the groovy, ‘De La Soul-esque’, rendition of “Summer Time” with Lee Mo. On the surface it’s a blend of jazz standards with a twist of some really funky originals. However, the concept is about not only outlasting the darkness, but also racing toward the light! The difference between p.m. and a.m. can be as small as a second. In the midnights of life, we have to maintain the hope of the sun. The ‘bright side of midnight’ is that the new day has already begun.
