Luke James Closes 2015 With Star Studded SOB’s Performance
Wednesday night, right on the cusp of all of the New Year’s Eve madness (that shut New York down), Grammy nominated Artist Luke James rounded up a few of his friends and a legion of his loyal fans for an incredible night of music, drinks, and some ‘dabbing’ at his “Luke James and Friends” Show at SOBs!
Accompanied by just his keyboardist and drummer, Luke opened the show with a semi-acoustic version of Michael Jackson‘s “The Way You Make Me Feel”, instantly getting the crowd involved singing along with every word. With some of his friends, like choreographer Jemel McWilliams, model Rita Lynn and Gabriel Williams of Stuff Fly People Like, vibin’ in the crowd Luke pulled no stops and his vocals were on point.
The night was filled with several musical surprises, including several impromptu covers of some of our favorite tunes like “Sexual Healing” and he even did a piece of “A Whole New World” from the Disney classic, “Aladdin”! By this time, the crowd had thickened up even more and Jessie J. had arrived. The “Bang, Bang” singer slid right in and into the VIP section to support her beau.
The night continued and started feeling more like a very cool jam session, as Luke invited his artist friends Jordan Bratton and Ro James to share some of there music with the audience. Both have very unique styles and great music that was received well.
Luke went on to do a small bit of Beyonce‘s hit single “Drunk in Love,” which he performed right before his Grammy nominated single “Options” (Beyonce won the award that year for “Drunk in Love”). Sans Rick Ross, Luke performed the hell out of that song and even threw in a piece of Marvin Gaye’s “Distant Lover” before performing crowd favorite, “Exit Wounds”. Everyone always anticipates the coveted “Well, f*&k you!” line holding middle fingers in the air proudly!
Shortly before Oscar winning actress Jennifer Hudson slid through the crowd with her fiance David Otunga and sister Julia Hudson. The singer and actress is currently on Broadway in the hit musical “Chicago” . I was hoping she’d grace the stage for a good belt, but to my dismay it never happened. But, Luke did perform “Mo’ Better Blues” off of his Whispers in the Dark project from 2013, mashing it up with a small piece of Adele’s “Hello”!
As the night came to a close Luke performed a moving rendition of Donny Hathaway’s “A Song For You”, ending the night with his hit love song, “I Want You”!
