Hot off the heels of scoring a #1 Billboard hit with his single “Keep You in Mind,” R&B singer/songwriter Guordan (pronounced Jour-dan) Banks has released his follow up single titled #WYWDT (Where You Wanna Do This?), featuring DeJ Loaf. Both singles will be featured on Guordan Banks’ upcoming debut album, UNPOPULAR, which will be released later this year on his own label, Bank On It Entertainment.
#WYWDT (Where You Wanna Do This?) is an urban contemporary track featuring rap verses from female hip hop artist DeJ Loaf. The upbeat tempo, suggestive lyrics and influence from reggae artist Shaggy’s “It Wasn’t Me,” displays another side of Banks’ artistry in comparison to his preceding single “Keep You in Mind.” Prior to its official release, #WYWDT (Where You Wanna Do This) received support from DJ Drama, and DJ Sense on Sirius XM’s Shade 45, as well as radio play on select stations.
The success of “Keep You in Mind” led to Banks becoming the first solely independent artist to have a number one song on the Billboard Adult R&B chart. The hit song surpassed every major label artist in the format and exceeded expectations of many industry insiders. In addition to his number one hit, Banks has had major success as a songwriter. The Philadelphia native has written songs for artists such as John Legend, Keyshia Cole, K. Michelle, Vivian Green, Lalah Hathaway, Ro James and Marcus Canty; and has collaborated with Kanye West, 50 Cent, Chris Brown, and Meek Mill.
2016 has been a busy year for Banks thus far. His work has received critical acclaim and is contributing to the resurgence and current elevation of R&B music. He has graced the stage at some of this year’s most notable events such as the 20th Annual American Black Film Festival, House of Blues in New Orleans; an on-air radio performance on the Sirius XM Heart & Soul Stage during theEssence Festival; the 40th Anniversary of the African American Festival, the V103 Summer Block Party, featuring Erykah Badu.
Raised in an adverse environment in Philadelphia, Banks’ parents, both preachers, surrounded their eight children with music and created a home where music was a centerpiece. At a young age, Guordan struggled with a speech impediment, which led to rejection in school plays and other activities, so his mom encouraged him to use singing as a form of everyday communication with the family. Singing became a way of life for Guordan and soon after he began exploring songwriting. Undeterred by the challenges in his early life experiences and buoyed the support of his family, Banks pursued a pathway that has guided his success as a talented singer and songwriter.
What’s next for the singer/songwriter? Banks is gearing up for his own promotional tour as well as preparing for the release of his debut album UNPOPULAR, which will include collaborations with actor Omari Hardwick (Starz’s POWER), Larry Gold, the legendary string composer who has worked with Kanye West and Justin Timberlake; and production from Rodney Jerkins (Darkchild).
