Gaming News: Valve offers Portal game free in the name of education
That's right people. Valve is so confident in the concepts that their award winning game Portal provides that they are giving away the first game in the series out for free until Sept. 20th.
Here is a statement the company released:
“It’s eye-opening to see how video games can be used in amazing and unexpected ways to help educate our next generation,” Valve said in a statement.
“Using interactive tools like the Portal series to draw them in makes physics, maths, logic, spatial reasoning, probability, and problem-solving interesting, cool, and fun which gets us one step closer to our goal—engaged, thoughtful kids.”
Essentially the invitation is that they want educators to actually try the game. Then once they see how the concepts are used to play the game, they invite them to contact the company about possibly providing a PC toolset that allows for the kids to design and set up their own physics based concepts, maps, or puzzles.
Pretty cool idea. Edutainment at its best!
