Get to Know New Artist: Fugi B.

Emerging rapper Fugi B. has his sights set on conquering the airwaves.  Having generated buzz in his hometown of St. Louis with his first mix tape, Midnight Transaction, the Gamble Inc. artist stands to assert himself as the reigning champion of The Lou with the release of his new project Demand and Conquer in early February.
The first single,“Good to Me”, features fellow St. Louis native Huey.  The duo reminisce about growing up in Kinloch, a beleaguered city just on the outskirts of St. Louis, where they had to work hard to navigate and transcend the negativity that often plagued the area.  Fugi’s enthusiastic and loyal fan base was grown from Kinloch, so it’s no surprise that it’s also where he first discovered his talent, as well as his devotion to hip-hop.

Fugi B. credits his older brother with piquing his interest in the craft of rapping and hip-hop.  At age nine, he would tag along behind his older brother, who spit verses at school and around the neighborhood.  Even at that young age, Fugi tried rapping for himself and realized, to his dismay, that he wasn’t very good.  But this soon changed.  He spent years studying and perfecting his craft, writing rhymes and performing, eventually surpassing his brother, whom Fugi says did it for fun and “never really took it seriously.”  The hard work paid off.  At age 14, a nervous (and still underage) Fugi B. was performing in night clubs to initially skeptical adult audiences who came to embrace him.

Today, far from those nightclubs and in the midst of a burgeoning rap career, Fugi B. is still grinding.  He has performed on the same stages as some of the most exciting artists ripping the charts today, including Drake, The Dream, and another celebrated St. Louisian, Chingy.  This past December, he opened for rapper Young Dro.  “I warmed it up the way Dro wanted me to,” he says confidently.  Although he is humble in his demeanor, Fugi B. is not one to take a back seat. He has to keep pushing.  In a year from now, he says he “most definitely wants to have one of the most talked about albums.”  His drive just might take him there.
