This week in unnecessary controversies came courtesy of the White House’s annual poetry night. Now, poetry itself is no stranger to controversy (which is weird, if you really think about it), but the argument wasn’t over content — it was about one of the performers. Some of the conservative right had issues with Common being on the roster, citing some of his lyrical content…look, I’m not going to get too wordy on this one. There are just moments that look to be (barely) concealed racism, and it’s frustrating to watch. So instead, watch this clip of Common’s performance and count the times that he says something incendiary. Yeah, that’s zero.

If you’d like to watch the rest of the performers, including Jill Scott, head over to the White House’s website, where they have 45 minutes of the evening posted (minus Common — due to licensing issues).
Next in our tour of the internet, I give you NYC musician/comedian Reggie Watts. The man’s a genius at his one-man-band bits. Ronen V got him to improv and broke down his loops visually.

And what would SNV be without a dancing video? Seriously, I just realized I’ve only done four of these things and three of them have dancers. What can I say? As a completely awkward/clumsy plodder, I’ve got nothing but respect for those who’ve got the skill of grace. I may or may not be a little too excited about this season of So You Think You Can Dance? (But forget you, Dancing with the Stars, you’s BORING.) So here’s a street dancer in Paris who manages to be awesome and hilarious.

Hey, do you know what’s more fun than dancing? ZOMBIES, duh. But I’ve never stopped to ponder the question “do zombies get lonely?” Luckily, the kids at PS 48Q in NY did. Here’s the short they put together (yes, they, the kids. 2nd and 3rd grade kids.) for the Urban Arts Partnership.

So that’s it for this week’s SNV. What, you ask? Why not post the Snoop/Sheen collab from this week? Because SERIOUSLY NO.
As usual, see something awesome? Send it along to us here @ Heed.
