Curran J. Swint: INSPIRED

In fashion, one day you’re in. The next day you’re out. Funny thing is, I think somebody forgot to give Curran J. Swint that memo—and rightfully so.  With a unique style all his own, he has managed to create quite a name for himself in his hometown of Philadelphia. Crediting his father as the most influential contributor to his style, his eclectic taste is comparable to that of Kanye West and Andre 3000; So, it’s no surprise that his acclaim and styling credits range from the local pages of the Philadelphia Inquirer to the international pages of major publications such as GQ, Complex and The Source Magazine.

Here’s the thing. These days fashion and style are about as exclusive as sliced bread. There has to be something extra about a person that sets them apart from the next fashionista/fashionisto.  They have to have a certain stylistic je ne sais quoi if you will. Perhaps a clothing line designed to empower, perhaps an impressive professional portfolio, perhaps humility, perhaps an innate desire to inspire, perhaps all of the above. Let’s take Curran’s Kings Rule Together blog for example. Developed back in 2010, this blog serves as his workbook for all things fashion, styling and event planning. It highlights the many aspects of what he does on a day-to-day basis, and even showcases his emerging fashion line. The high-end tee shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies, branded with the mantra Kings Inspire Kings, have become noticeably popular. Terrance J., co-host of BET’s hit music show 106th and Park sported the Kings Rule Together line twice this past December. I mean, who wouldn’t want to don something that empowering? With so many negative comments being thrown around, it’s quite refreshing to hear someone refer to their brother as King and their sister as Queen.

As an event planner, Curran J started Arts, Beats, and Eats, a socially conscious, social networking event. It’s one thing to have a mix and mingle with never ending cocktails and second-rate hors d’oeuvres; but it’s another thing to host a fashion forward event that dubs as a safe space for dialogue touching on those social, educational, and political woes plaguing our urban communities.  A joint effort with several of his likeminded friends, Arts, Beats, and Eats takes place once a month and has been successfully functioning in Philadelphia since 2010 with the promise of continued expansion and growth.

Basically, what I’m saying is Curran J is inspired and that’s an undeniable truth. He’s managed to turn his love for fashion into something more, something bigger—and that’s a trend that will never go out of style.
